Many websites are going dark tomorrow between 8am-8pm EST in protest of SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act). While not all of the websites are going totally dark, many have pledged their support for the protest movement. Participating websites include Google, WordPress, Wikipedia, Reddit, Mozilla, and many others. You can find a complete list of participating websites here.
Both of these bills are designed to stop piracy and protect copyrights, however the issue is that they’re severely flawed in the way they’re written. In a nutshell, they have the potential to give the entertainment industry (among others) the power to have the government shut down websites that they believe are in copyright violation. While I do believe in protecting the copyrights of others, I do NOT believe in giving the government the power to censor the Internet… which is effectively what these bills would do, if passed. You can learn more about SOPA, PIPA, and the blackout movement at SOPAStrike.com and AmericanCensorship.org.
Here’s a video that explains more:
This infographic also offers a great explanation.
While the movement tomorrow is united, the freedom of expression is still alive. Some sites have designed their own blackout pages (like this one) and others will be using this SOPA Blackout WordPress plugin, which is what I will be using. What about you? Are you protesting tomorrow? What are your views on SOPA & PIPA? Leave me a comment and tell me what you think!

SOPA has been pulled and PIPA has been postponed. Time to get PIPA pulled, however.
