7 Backlink Building Methods You Should Be Using

backlink buildingLinks to your website (i.e. backlinks) are a critical factor in how your website ranks on the search engines and how much organic traffic you’re able to generate.  In a nutshell, Google (and other search engines) see links similar to a vote for your website. They also view the anchor text used to hyperlink to your websites to be a relevant factor in determining what your webpage is about. Given the importance of backlink building, there are several different methods you can use to obtain links back to your webpages that will help find success. Here’s a list of 7 backlink building methods I recommend:

1 – Internal Linking – I’m always surprised at how many people don’t do this. Internal linking is simply linking to your own webpages from within your website. While these links are not counted as highly as external links from other websites, they do count and they also help the search engines crawl your site more effectively. Before you publish your next blog post, see if you can reference a previous post or webpage on your site as a way for the reader to get more information on the topic. Be sure to use that blog posts target keyword as your anchor text. (Yep, I just did some internal linking right there with that “target keyword” link – see how easy that was ;) )

2 – .edu Links – Not all links are equal in the eyes of the search engines. One link type that is counted more highly than other links are .edu links, which belong to websites that are connected to educational institutions. It can be a challenge to get links from .edu website, but my friend Kenny Fabre created a free .edu backlinks resource that I recommend you check out. I’ve already built a few links using the sites he recommends and definitely plan on building more (thanks Kenny!).

3 – Article Syndication -  In case you missed it, the Google Panda update early last year changed the effectiveness of mass article distribution. So I changed my article marketing strategy, but I definitely didn’t give up on syndicating my content. One method that I have found to be very effective is the use of a new plugin called Auto Traffic Buddy. It automatically publishes an excerpt of your blog posts on their blog network with a direct link back to your original post. I plan on writing a post that shares more details about Auto Traffic Buddy and the results I’m getting soon, so keep a lookout for that.

4 – RSS Feed Submission – If you’ve never heard of RSS, it stands for Real Simple Syndication and it’s just another way for people to view and share your blog content. Blogs come with RSS feeds already built in and submitting your RSS feed to RSS directories is a great way to get links back to your site. I manually submitted my main RSS feed to several RSS directories when I first launched this site, but now I’m leveraging an even more powerful RSS strategy using a plugin called RSS Link Bomber. The plugin automatically creates individual RSS feeds for each post I publish and then it submits those feeds to the directories on autopilot. Very cool.

5 – Social Bookmarking – Social bookmarking are basically links that you bookmark like you would in your web browser, except you’re sharing them with others. There are tons of social bookmarking sites out there to choose from, so it can be a daunting task to choose which ones to submit to. My personal strategy for this backlink building method includes OnlyWire because its the easiest and most effective way to submit your post to multiple sites at one time. I’ve also started using Social Monkee and SocialAdr as free ways to get bookmarks from others, rather just my own accounts.

6 – Blog Comments – This is one of my favorite backlink building strategies simply because it allows me to connect with other bloggers while I do it (and it’s easy). My blog commenting strategy includes using the Comment Luv search engine to find blogs in my area of interest that are already using the Comment Luv plugin. By strategically commenting on these blogs, I get two backlinks for each comment: 1) one link to my domain using my name or primary keyword in the name field (depending on the blog), and 2) another link to a recent blog post compliments of that nifty plugin.

7 – Social Media – Social media website include sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and others. These types of links have grown in their importance over the past couple of years after sites like Facebook grew by the billions. I use Hootsuite to manage several of my different social media profiles and it allows me to submit my status updates & blog post links to more than one social media site at one time, which is real time saver.

Are you currently using any of these backlink building methods? I’d love to hear how these methods are working for you and if you’ve got any other methods that I didn’t include in my list, so please leave me a comment below!

Hi Kenny, I’m so glad you found the article helpful and I KNOW people have enjoyed your .edu links article because – although they didn’t all leave comments here – I’ve had a few people thank for me for including it here elsewhere. So, it was my pleasure to offer it as a valuable resource, my friend! :)

This article was extremely helpful. I purchased RSS Link Bomber from your link. The video tutorials are very easy to follow. I’m expecting good things from that plugin.

Also, just a quick question about your links. How do you make your link appear as “http://www.mikaylasway.com/rsslinkbomber” and completely hide your affiliate info?

Thanks so much for this info.

    JC

Hi JC, I’m so glad you found the information I shared helpful and thank you for making a purchase from one of my links. :)

To answer your question about my link structure, I use a plugin called Ninja Affiliate. It’s allows you to create links like mine very easily. It also has some really nice features, like automatically adding your affiliate links to your blog for keywords you choose, which is why I got it in the first place. It’s also configurable so that you can limit the number of links per keyword and per post, and it shows basic link stats as well. I love it and do recommend it, but it’s not free. If all you really want to do is create nicer looking affiliate links, you can use the lite version of an alternative plugin called Pretty Links – its FREE. ;)
